Summer Camp FAQs

What will my child be doing at theatre camp?
Phoenix Theatre is the leading professional theatre company in the Valley and is known for excellence in musical theatre. We offer programs from age 4 to adult and each class focuses on specific skills and a weekly theme. Our classes are age appropriate and are intended for students with little or no experience and for students with experience ready for the next challenge. If you are not sure about which class is right for your child, please contact Hanna Spence-Schehr directly and she will guide you through the process. ( or 602-889-5293)

Please note the age range for each class has an “overlap” age so that you can determine which age range is right for your child. Please do not ask to put younger children in an older age group.

Students in all-day classes will need a sack lunch daily or lunches can be pre-purchased online prior to attending camp (please see instructions below)*. There will not be access to a refrigerator or microwave. Please send water with your student each day. We provide opportunities for students to refill water bottles throughout the day. Make sure all items are clearly labeled with your student’s name. There are both morning and afternoon break times in addition to the mid-day lunch break. Students are welcome to bring a snack from home, or can purchase snacks from our snack bar. All concession items are $1 and the snack bar is open during morning break, lunch and afternoon break. Students in the half-day classes (Little Playmakers ages 4-6) will not visit the snack bar on break. Please send your child with a snack and water each day for their mid-class break. There is no snack bar available during evening classes; however, there are vending machines located in the Green Room that are available to students.

What should my child wear to camp?
Theatre camp is very active!  So make sure that your child is dressed to play and move. Closed toe shoes are a must – no flip flops! (Dance shoes are acceptable but not necessary.) Comfortable clothing that allows movement (no revealing clothing.) We have “Spirit Activities” with themes each week so your child may be asked to wear something specific to the theme – this information is sent home on Mondays so you can prepare and we ask that you keep it simple and keep it from home.  For the Friday performances, your teachers will instruct the students what they will be wearing – this may be a costume from home or a certain color of clothing for their character. They may be asked to bring in a prop or they may be making a prop at camp.  All of this information will be communicated each week. Do not have your child wear or bring anything valuable to camp. Phoenix Theatre is not responsible for lost or soiled items.

Who will my child’s teachers be?
All of our teachers are professional actors and/or teaching artists with Phoenix Theatre. Our teachers are selected for their impressive resumes, but more importantly their ability to work with and instruct children. All Camp Staff employed by Phoenix Theatre have undergone a fingerprint background check as part of an extensive screening process.  We also have the best Internship Program for our Camp Counselors. Camp Counselors must be at least 16 years old and have been selected from a very large group of outstanding applicants. Counselors go through training and are on staff to assist the teachers with all aspects of the camp process.

What if my child needs to miss all or part of a camp?
Please make every effort to be at camp every day and on time. The value of what we teach depends on each student’s participation in order to create an ensemble with a coordinated show at the end of each week, and to build the skills of acting, singing, and dancing. We do not offer refunds, so please be sure to check vacation schedules before registering for class. Of course, in the case of illness, please keep your child at home and inform the Camp Director promptly of your student’s absence. If for any reason you need to drop off late or pick up early, please inform the Camp Director as our doors are locked during the camp day for safety.

What is the Drop-off and Pick-up procedure?
All students are dropped off and picked up at Phoenix Theatre’s Rehearsal Room B. This room is located adjacent to the Hardes Theatre on the northwest corner of Alvarado and McDowell. Please review the campus map for available parking. On the first day of class, all students need to be signed in by a parent or guardian and ID will be checked. Parents can opt to have older children sign themselves out after the first day of camp by signing the appropriate form in your Camp Registration Packet. Please bring your camp registration materials completely filled out on your first day of camp and turn in at the check-in desk when signing in your child. Students can start arriving for camp by 8:45am – any student arriving before 8:45am will be considered part of our Pre-Camp and will be charged the daily rate of $10 for the morning. Any student not picked up by 3:30pm will be considered part of our Post-Camp and will be charged the daily rate of $10 for the afternoon. If you have already purchased post camp but have not picked up your camper by the 5:30PM cut off time you will be charged an additional $2.50 per minute based on our clock. The total fee will be due within 24 hours of the late pick up. To keep this fair for all camp families we will not be making exceptions due to traffic, weather, car trouble etc. Please contact the camp hub at 602-889-7611 if you are aware of a possible late arrival but understand that notification will not negate the fees.

Please notify the Camp Director of any concerns with drop-off or pick-up.

Will students be outside during the day?
All class activities as well as lunches will take place indoors. Students will only be outside when walking to classrooms in our main building. At times, teachers opt to have breaks outside, but these breaks are very short and are always in the shade in our courtyard or patio.

Do you offer scholarships?
